PORTSMOUTH — In the wake of a house fire that was extinguished Sunday morning, Fire Chief Michael Cranson reminded residents to wait until ashes have cooled off before they’re removed from fireplaces and wood stoves.

At 8:55 a.m. Sunday, the Fire Department received a 911 call from the homeowner at 84 Power St., reporting that his house was on fire.

Engine 1, Engine 3, and Ladder 1 responded to the scene four minutes later, according to Deputy Fire Chief Michael O’Brien.

“Arriving crews, under the charge of Capt. Darryl Sieben, found the fire in the attached garage of the home,” the deputy said in a prepared statement. “Crews stretched an attack line into the garage, quickly extinguishing the fire. Damage was contained to the garage; high levels of carbon monoxide were found in the home but quickly removed with ventilation.”

There were no injuries and the residents were able to stay in their home, he said.

The fire started when hot embers that had been removed from a wood stove burned through its container, Deputy O’Brien said.

Chief Cranson said once cooled ashes are removed from a fireplace or wood stove, they must be stored outdoors in a metal container and away from any combustible materials.
