PORTSMOUTH — Police, firefighters and the state Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of a blaze that damaged the Maritime Solutions building at 1250 East Main Road Wednesday night.

Just after 9 p.m., the Portsmouth Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a building fire at the business, which sells and services inflatable boats and outboard motors.

“Responders arrived to find a heavily involved structure burning,” said Deputy Fire Chief Michael O’Brien in a prepared statement. “The building contained a heavy fire load, which created an intense and smoky fire.”

A second alarm was called for by Fire Chief Michael Cranson on arrival, and additional responders included engines from Bristol, Middletown and Tiverton. Naval Station Newport covered the Portsmouth station during the incident.

“The fire was placed under control at approximately 10:20 p.m. There were no injuries,” said Deputy O’Brien.

The Portsmouth Department of Public Works provided sand to assist with icing conditions and the Portsmouth Water and Fire District secured water to the building.

“A hydrant directly in front of the burning building was found out of service, delaying water supply,” the deputy said.

The fire took place only 35 minutes after Portsmouth crews had returned from a structure fire in Middletown. All crews were cleared from the scene by 1:04 a.m.

Car versus pole

It was a busy night for firefighters. Just 45 minutes after the last crew departed the fire scene, they responded to an accident in which a car had struck a telephone pole on East Main Road, just north of Church Lane.

The crash ejected from the vehicle a 38-year-old Boston man who was found laying in the road outside of his car. “The pole had been snapped and electrical wires blocked access to the patient,” said Deputy O’Brien.

Prior to National Grid’s arrival, rescue workers were able to get access to the patient and begin care. The man was transported to Newport Hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, said the deputy.
